cardboard makes an unlikely canvas for paintings - unless the artist is tom degroot. “Corrugated cardboard is particularly attractive to me for its associations outside art. It is the highly processed, rigidly uniform product of large factories, used to package our consumer culture, yet it can assume surprisingly graceful and organic forms.”
degroot’s approach to abstract painting is refreshing and lively. after mounting the ‘canvas’ on wood, he then applies several layers of paint before pouring tinted resin that puddles, drips and bubbles on the cardboard, falling in and out of crevices and creating a rhythmic dance across the surface.
