tassin’s necco wafer art

Remember Necco Wafers? Candy discs that give you a sugar rush if you eat more than two? I haven’t had one since I was about twelve years old. Too sweet for me. But according to the company website, “Creative Necco Wafer fans have invented various additional uses for Necco Wafers over the years. They have been used as poker chips, for practice before a first communion and as bulls-eyes at target ranges.”
I think it’s time someone told them that Denise Tassin has found another interesting use for them.
The enterprising artist uses the pastel candies as a canvas for her miniature drawings. And that’s not the only thing she uses as a canvas. How about paint color charts and index tabs? Or guitar picks? And would you believe round tags and tiddleywinks? Tassin’s Baltimore studio is filled with everyday objects that she uses as a canvas…and some unusual items like fish scales, but it is her Necco drawings that have created a real buzz.
She uses high-tech Micron pens on the decidedly low-tech confections. Pictured above is a collection from her Science series. I think these are the licorice and wintergreen flavors. Or maybe lime? We’ll never know since the drawings are not edible, just collectible. Kudos to Tassin for taking the obvious, the simple, the ordinary and turning it into the extraordinary.
